با یك بررسی كلی در آثار ملاصدرا می توان به این نكته پی برد كه وی در آثار خود هم از وحدت تشكیكی وجود سخن گفته و هم در تحقیقات نهایی خود از وحدت شخصی وجود به سبك اهل عرفان سخن رانده است .در این اینجا ابتدا به تبیین هر یك از این دو دیدگاه می پردازیم و پس از آن باور و تلقی اصلی و نهایی ملاصدرا (ره) را در این زمینه بیان خواهیم كرد .
قسمتی از متن: در تاریخ فلسفه وحدت و كثرت شاید نخستین مسئله ای بوده است كه به طور جدی محل بحث و منازعه قرار گرفته است . در یونان اولین پرسشی كه برای متفكران مطرح شد این بود كه آیا در پشت تنوع و تفاوت های هستی ، وحدتی وجود دارد یا خیر ؟ تقریبا تمام فیلسوفان یونان به این پرسش پاسخ مثبت دادند اما در تعیین نوع این وحدت و چگونگی پیوند وحدت و كثرت در جهان اتفاق نظری حاصل نشد . با آمدن افلاطون و سپس ارسطو به عرصه فلسفه ، مسئله وحدت و كپرت به گونه ای جدی تر و پخته تر مطرح شد و آراء پراكنده به نظام های تمام عیار فلسفی تبدیل شد . اینك باید دید كه فلاسفه مسلمان قبل از صدرالمتألهین در این باب چه گفته اند .
