آسیا، وسیعترین و پرجمعیّتترین قارّة زمین، با وسعتی قریب ۴۴ میلیون که از کل سطح زمین و بیش از٧٢٢‘٢ میلیون نفر جمعیت (١٩٨٢م)، واقع در نیمکرة شمالی، از نزدیکی خط استوا تا نزدیکی قطب شمال؛ شمالیترین حد این قاره، شبهجزیره تایمیر با ْ٧٧ و َ۴٠ عرض در اقیانوس منجمد شمالی و جنوبیترین نقطة آن، رأس شبهجزیرة مالاکا با ْ١ و َ١۶ عرض شمالی در نزدیکی خط استوا واقع است.
وجه تسمیه: منشأ نام آسیا به درستی معلوم نیست. بنا به روایت هرودوت (د ح ۴٢۵ق م)،یونانیان تصور میکردند آسیا براساس نام پرومته نامگذاری شده است. در مقابل ایشان، لیدپاییها معتقد بودند نام آسیا از نام آسیس ، پسر کوتیس ، گرفته شده است. متأخرین نام آسیا را مأخوذ از کلمة آسوری یا فنیقیِ آشو یا آسو به معنای طلوع آفتاب و سرزمین واقع در شرق میدانند. در مقابل این لفظ، در همین زبانها، لفظ ارب ، به معنای غروب آفتاب وجود دارد که از آن نام اروپا ، و عربستان منشأ گرفته است.
